One of the passions of the “Kegel Klub” is a weekend of sailing in Holland.  Our third trip in 10 years was in 2006 on the Dolce Vita. The boats are old merchant ships that were built around the turn of the 19th century and have become obsolete.  Many have been remodeled inside to accommodate people instead of freight and are chartered out for pleasure. The Dolce Vita had its maiden voyage in 1909 transporting cargo from Friesland to the tulip fields.  In 1999 this Zuiderzee tjalk was remodeled.  Since the seas they sail are very shallow the boats do not have keels but have retractable planks on each side of the boat that are put into the water on the leeward side to stabilize the ship and allow better steering.  Boats are available to accommodate groups from 10 to 70 people. Day, weekend or a week or more trips are possible. It is a fantastic experience which frees the soul.

We boarded the boat on Friday evening in Stavoren. On Saturday the strong wind took us from Stavoren to Monnickendam in record time (blue line).  This took us through the sluice in the dike at Enkhuizen.  Our arrival in Monnickendam was spectacular, I am sure no one has even seen a sail boat enter a harbor and park at that speed. We stayed the night in the harbor of Monnickendam. The trip back on Sunday was not as easy with little wind being a headwind at that. Part of the way we used the motor since we had to get back that day to get home for work the next day (red line).

Here are impressions of our last trip in 2006. The pictures are the curtsey of almost all the members of the crew, except for me and Rainer
