Old buildings that stood here have been demolished to
make way for larger, more modern buildings or a park.
|

The previous year, the Fulihua Hotel in Changsha had a
banner that read
"Welcome American Old People." Of course, in China, old people are
respected, and this was intended as a sign of respect.

We saw many people carrying loads in this fashion,
and Garr wanted a picture.

Mrs Fu spoke to us about Chariman Mao and showed
us pictures of his relatives and items he had owned.

loved this watery dragon.

Though it's very hard to see in this misty picture, the
top of the highest peak is a building. The view is from near the statue of
Chairman Mao in Shaoshan.

r27-f24 |
Birthplace of Chairman Mao in Shaoshan. When he was
born here two families lived in the building, as in a duplex. The Chairman's
family lived on the left side. The family on the right was also named Mao.
Nobody lives in the house now.

"The pond where Mao Zedong had swum", reads
the sign near his birthplace. The sign isn't really these strange
colors. It came out looking black in the photo and had to be enhanced on
the computer to be read at all.

Linda asked, by signaling with her camera, if she could take
the children's picture. They were very enthusiastic, and Linda "asked"
them to gather closely together. This they did with great relish, giving Linda
one of her favorite pictures of the whole trip.
