| Garr and Yang, our national guide, on the Drum Tower, next to the drum, in Xi'an. The present center of Xi'an is still surrounded by its old city wall which was constructed in 1370-78, during the reign of the first Ming emperor, on the remains of Sui and Tang dynasty palace walls. These walls are the largest and best preserved in China. Running more than 8 miles around the center, the city wall was once surrounded by a moat, with a draw bridge at each of the four city gates. The gates are all double towers, with a courtyard between. Xi'an has continued to grow so that now, the section beyond the original wall is far larger than the inner city. |
