In 64 A.D. the Emperor dreamt of a 5 meter tall golden man. He asked one of his ministers the meaning of the dream. He was told that the man in the dream was the Buddha worshipped in the west. He sent two men to India to learn about Buddhism. These men went to India and found two Buddhist monks and lived with them for two years. They invited the monks to come to China, which they did. They arrived in Luoyang, then the capitol of China, with scriptures and statues carried here by two white horses. The horses died from the exertion of the trip and the Emperor named the temple for them. The monks are burried on the temple grounds. During the cultural revolution (1966 - 1976,) the temple and Longmen Grottos were protected from the Red Guard by the army by order of Zhou Enlai.

A ball on the pole with rods sticking out is something that we saw all over China in the cities. At night they light up like a skyrocket exploding in the night sky. Also see a similar picture from Guiyang, in southwest China.

Next to the New Friendship Hotel, where we stayed in Luoyang, there was a "night market". Some of the vendors, including this painter, were still there the next morning.

One of many gift shops we saw. This one, at the folk museum, had some shoes made for bound feet. They were for sale. Betty holds them up here. Did she buy them?
