Watch tower as seen from outside the Forbidden City. This one
would be in the lower right corner of the above diagram.
|

r04-f21 |
Forbidden City. This courtyard was the
location where officials were punished when the need arose. Striaght ahead
you can see some of the 5 bridges that represented the 5 virtues. One
of the 5 is intelligence and that's as far as my notes go.

This building is known as the "Gate of
Supreme Harmony" and is the first building you come to after entering
the Forbidden City through the Meridian Gate. This building is seen
at left of previous picture.
|

r04-f22 |
Forbidden City. This was a waiting room where officials
would wait for the Emperor.
|

r04-f23 |
Forbidden City. Some of the bridges again.
|

r04-f25 |
Forbidden City. Close up of part of one of the bridges.
|

r04-f26 |
Forbidden City. Looking off to the left (east) of
the Gate of Supreme Harmony we see steps leading to a waiting room
and the northeast corner of the courtyard is at the left.
|

r04-f27 |
Stone lion infront of
the Gate of Supreme Harmony.
Males have a ball under the right foot. Females have a baby lion,
often under the left foot.

Guard at the Gate of Supreme Harmony.
|

r04-f29 |
Forbidden City. Going beyond the the Gate of
Supreme Harmony, where the Emperor met with his ministers and officials one
comes to this courtyard. The building ahead is the
Hall of Supreme Harmony.

Hall of Supreme Harmony in the
Forbidden City.
|

r04-f30 |
Forbidden City. Probably a building off to one side.
Note the little figures on the edge of the roof. The greater their
number the higher the rank of the official inside. The Emperor was the only one who could use the
number 9 in his belongings. Everyone else used smaller numbers.

Carving detail.
|

r04-f34 |
Forbidden City. Second courtyard again, I believe,
looking at the far left corner from where we entered.
The large pots held water in case of fire.
|

Looking south
toward the Gate
of Supreme Harmony from the couryard infront of the Hall of
Supreme Harmony. Elderhostelers in our tour.
|

r04-f36 |
Sun dial on the terrace infront of the Hall
of Preserved Harmony, I think.
|

r05-f01 |
Forbidden City. Statue infront of the Hall
of Preserved Harmony. This was
one of 5 mythical beasts that were the children of something (anybody remember?)
|

r05-f02 |
Forbidden City. Looking back the way we'd come.
|

r05-f03 |
Throne in the Hall of Protective Harmony, where the emperors
gave banquets and interviewed those who had successfully passed
the gruelling imperial examinations.
