Statue of Mr. Li, who ruled China for 44 days at end of the Ming Dynasty. When a general at the Great Wall learned that an official very close to Mr Li was too interested in the general's wife, the general invited the Manchurians through the gate and that was the end of Emperor Li.

The Long Corridor at Emperor's Summer Palace. Many pictures are painted along the sides and overhead. They illustrate stories that are well known in China or are landscapes from Southern China. The walk is in the Guiness Book of World Records either for its length or the number of pictures. china r03-f34

Pagoda up the hill from the covered walk. My memory is failing me. Is this where the 44 day Emperor, Mr. Li, went to escape and killed himself here? I seem to remember something about charcoal preparation here too.

As we came to the end of the Long Corridor the pagoda in the previous pictures was to the right and up Longevity Hill. This gate and Kunming Lake behind it were to our left. china r04-f03

Lion at Qing Emperor's Summer Palace. Male lion sculptures, like this one, have a ball, usually under their right foot. Female lion sculptures in China usually have a baby lion under their left foot. We saw this identification convention with elephant sculptures also.

The Emperor had a large boat like this on the lake but it burnt. He had it replaced with this "Marble" one. It doesn't float but it is permanent, as he wished his reign to appear.
