Saturday evening we, and Keggeling group except for Marianne and Michael, went in to Köln to see a fireworks display. We met at 7:00 and took the train from Overath. The train got crowded after we got on and when an elderly couple got on I offered my seat to them. I'd assumed the lady would take it. The man did however and for the rest of the way into Köln we had an interesting conversation. They knew only a word or two of English and I knew only four months worth of "Learn German In Your Car", a set of CDs I'd bought. Linda remembered some German from high school. We did communicate and had a good time at it. germany Germany-164

We passed the Köln Dom on the way to the Rhine from the train station. The fireworks were shot off from a barge on the Rhine. It was a late night since it isn't dark till about 11:00 p.m. that time of year.

Here we stand by the outdoor bronzes of Tuennes and Schael, which were unveiled in 1974. The figures from the repertoire of the Kölsch-dialect Haenneschen Theater, founded in 1802, have become local heros. The "Tuennes within us" stands for our spontaneous, human side, while "Schael" represents our rational nature. germany Germany-172
