After breakfast we went down to this Tarahumara residence. This is a view, probably from our room, before breakfast. It was such a long walk to and from our room that Linda took pictures the whole way. This is the first where I'm outside our room.

We head down the hill, 225 stairs apporximately, to see where the nearest of the Tarahumara live. Our salmon hotel, above, represents illegal, yet legal, encroachment onto the Tarahumara lands. All this land was set aside for the Tarahumara, but wealthy Mexicans have been able to buy pieces here and there. The Tarhumara used to live at the top of the canyons in summer and at the bottoms in the winter. It's much warmer at the bottom, so much so that orange and mango trees grow there. Now, for fear of losing their land at the top of the canyon to some wealthy Mexican, they don't leave in spite of the coming of winter.

This little spring supplies them with water. The lower pond is used for soaking material for baskets, to darken them. The water in the smaller basin is used for drinking. This little puppy is their pet.

There were a few houses in this spot, sheltered somewhat by the cliff. This house was under construction. The Tarahumara women were always dressed colorfully in what I took to be traditional dress They were the ones selling handicrafts. We never say the men close up. They were, I think, busy working and dressed in jeans and T-shirts, as you will see on the next page. I guess they didn't feel presentable to tourists.
